While taking the waist measurement, you might ask if they want your belly button waist or from where you wear your pants. A lot of people do not wear their pants from the belly buttons, although high waist pants are back in fashion too! So, this is a very genuine question, and the answer depends on how you want your garment or dress to fit!

If you want it to fit high waisted, then you measure at the belly button. However, you want it to fit just where you wear your regular pants, then you measure right from there! Simply use the measuring tape to measure the circumference of that area and note it down on a piece of paper. Just make sure that you do not wrap the measuring tape too tightly around the waist.

Use your finger to leave a slight gap in between so that the pants or jeans can fit on properly without being too tight. 

If you are measuring your waist from old pants, make sure that it fits you properly and has the right size. Spread it on a flat surface, button it up, remove any wrinkles and then measure the waist-length from one end to another. You can then double the length to get the right measurement for the waist (for example, if it is 16 inches on one side, this means your waist size is 32).

Hip Measurement

While measuring the hips, you have to measure the fullest part of your hips. You can move your measuring tape up and down until you can take the right measurement.

If you are measuring it from your old pants, then place the measuring tape around 1.5 inches below the zipper and measure for the hip area. You can then double the reading to get the measurement for your hips. 

Thigh Measurement

Just like the hip measurement, use the measuring tape to measure from the widest part of your thighs and note down the number. The thigh measurement is normally not needed when buying pants online. However, you might need it if you are getting your pants tailored so you must know how to take the measurement. 

Knee Measurement

Again, you won’t need your knee measurement unless you are getting your jeans tailored yourself. You measure the knee; you can use the measuring tape to measure around the fullest part of your knee. Make sure you leave a finger gap in between so that it can fit properly without being too tight. 

When measuring old jeans or pants, remove any fullness and measure the fullest part of the knee. Then double the number and note it down on a piece of paper. 

Length Measurement

Once again, you have to consider the starting and the endpoint according to the type of pants or skirt you want. If you want them to start from the high waist point, then you have to start the measurements from the belly button. If you want them to start from the natural waisted point, you have to measure from where you put your pants on.

Then after choosing from where to start, you can choose where you want your bottoms to end depending on the style you want. If you are choosing culottes, you can simply decide where you want them to end by place the measuring tape right at that point and note down the measurement. If you are measuring the length of simple jeans or pants, you can measure the top of the waistband till where you want them to end.

Girth Measurement

When taking the girth measurement for your pants, you simply choose where you want your pants to hit and the measure from the front where you want your pants to head through your legs and up the back. 

Front Rise Measurement

For the front rise measurement, place the measuring tape on the crotch seam spot and measure up to the spot of the waistband. This will give you the front rise measurement.

Inseam Measurement

Place the measuring tape to measure from the inside of your crotch down to the length that you want for your pants. That is your Inseam measurement.
